Mica Capacitors
A 3400 pF air-gap capacitor is connected to a 23 V battery.?
If a piece of mica fills the space between the plates, how much charge will flow from the battery?
The capacitance will go up from 3400 pF to anywhere between 17000 and 23800 pF, due to the dielectric constant of the mica, which varies from 5.0 to 7.0 (see source). The change of 13600 to 20400 pF will be charged with 2.3e1 * 1.36e-8 = 3.1 up to 2.3e1 * 2.04e-8 = 4.7e-7 coulombs from the 23 volt battery. The dielectric constants are given as two digit precision but the range makes it barely half a digit real precision because of the vagueness of the question – what type of mica?
Almost anything has a higher dielectric constant than air, which is about the same as a vacuum. Mica is an insulator that is often used in radio frequency capacitors, although less common today than it was 50 years ago.
