How can I modify an LED driver to keep the LED within specs?
I have a 3 watt yellow LED. It’s rated voltage is 2-3 volts, with a current of about 750mA. I have a current source to drive the LED, it puts out a constant 650mA. However, when I hook this driver up to this LED, the current is correct at about 650, but the voltage drop across the LED is about 3.5 v. I’ve only turned the driver and LED on for short periods of time, just enough to test, then off. From my understanding, the current is the most important part of driving an LED, but since the voltage is out of spec, I’m afraid the life of the LED won’t be very long.
What would be the best solution in this situation?
Nothing is wrong. The voltage drop given is approximate.
You cannot alter the voltage across the LED at a given current. It is what it is.
If it requires a heatsink, put a heatsink on it. If not, just make sure there is sufficient airflow/space around it.
