High Voltage Transistor
which transistor is best suited for high temperature applications???
i am using a BC548 in darlington configuration for switching application (used to trigger a 6V 30 ohm relay). relay is connected between the emitter junction and supply Vcc=9V. the circuit works fine except that it starts to malfunction due to heating of the transistor. the temperature of the transistor when ON increases to around 50*C due to which the voltage drop of 8V at the relay reduces to around 4 to 5V. is there a solution for this? i have tried using a aluminium heat sink but it isnt working. Please suggest a different model of a transistor that is capable of retaining it’s proper functioning at higher temperatures.
The BC548 is rated at 100 mA maximum collector current. a 30 Ohm relay coil with 9 V applied will draw 300 mA, 3 times the maximum rating of the BC548. The BC548 is hopeless for your application. If you have the room, a TIP122 NPN Darlington (5 A max collector current, TO-220 case) should work well and costs about 45 cents. For your application, no heat sink should be needed. There are hundreds of other transistors that would also work.
