Flashing Water
My VW Polo (2001) is overheating &the light flashing + there was no water/coolant in it. Engine smoking,help?
As soon as I noticed this today I immediately put two litres of water in it (no coolant), drove the 1 mile home from shop, and light started flashing again AND engine smoking! Any advice?? Thank you!
I hope that when you poured the water into the car, it was running and that you did it very slowly. Should NEVER pour cold water into an engine that has boiled. Let it cool down first.
I would think that you may have a small leak in the system, possibly at water pump. This will result in a noticeable drop in the coolant and boiling.
You may also have a cylinder head gasket that is blown allowing water to run into combustion chamber. You would see a noticeable drop in the coolant.
Is the oil still okay, if it has taken on a milky appearance then cracked/blown cylinder head is the problem. (Oil level should also increase).
If cold water was added to the hot engine, the head could have cracked or warped. If the head is warped, it will have to be skimmed otherwise you will achieve nothing by replacing the gasket. Cracked will turn out to be expensive.
Are you sure that the sensor unit to switch on the fans is working. Generally found at bottom of radiator. I while back I was puzzled with exactly the same problem. Changed thermostat, checked if fans worked by supplying power directly to them, only to discover it was the sensor unit not working. Did not switch on as temperature rose.
Possibly the pump impeller that may have sheared. To check if pump is operating, take of radiator cap and run car for a while, you should be able to see water circulating (movement of water (will not occur while engine is cold as thermostat stops flow).
