What electronic components computers use to generate their frequencies?
depends if you’re talking about AMD or INTEL. both are the same idea, and i have more experience with AMD. basically, there is a clock generator circuit, just consists of a few capacitors and resistors and a chips that outputs a high or low voltage. varrying the resistor and capacitor values on the board varry the amount of time the clock is high or low, and you want en even period for the most stability. default for AMD is 200MHz and its called the bus frequency. that bus frequency is then mulitplied by the CPU’s multiplier, usually ranging from 4ish up to 15ish in increments of .5. so 8->8.5->9 etc. and a 3GHz processor will have a 200MHz X 15 multi = 3GHz.
two ways of overclocking are to increase the bus frequency, done in the bios. the second way is to get a black edition processor for AMD, called something else for intel, which gives you an unlocked multiplier. i think it goes up to 30 or something. the most stable way is to use the unlocked multiplier. so the faster you run the processor, the more voltage you have to feed it to keep it stable. the more voltage you feed it, the more heat generated, which requires aftermarket heatsinks.
also, the frequencies for the ram are calculated similarly to the CPU with a ram multiplier.
the bus speed is the base frequency that all components get their final frequencies from, after a multiplier.
