Why do scientist like to use graphs to display information?
Is that really helpful for them?
Graphs are simply models of some aspect of the real world. Like all models, they are incomplete representations, but if done correctly, they can provide insights on specific things that numbers cannot do as well.
For example, graphs are excellent for depicting trends, where the numbers have a distinct pattern (like rising, oscillating, etc.). As you get along in school you may learn how to convert raw numbers into graphs using a technique called regression.
Graphs are also good for representing proportions of a whole. The so-called pie chart does this very nicely in that the whole looks like a pie and the proportions are depicted as slices of the pie. Bar charts are also good for this. Longer bars mean bigger proportions of the whole.
