Ceramic Capacitor
Ceramic or Electrolytic Capacitor?
I know this is a stupid question but I’m using LM7805 Voltage Regulator and the data sheet says to use .33uF on input and .1uF on output.
I never know what type of capacitor to use.

I’m hooking up as Figure 7 on page 22.
Is there a general rule as to what type to use or does it matter so long as you use the right values? Thanks
The input capacitor type isn’t so critical, and almost any capacitor of at least .33 uF (including a 100uF electrolytic) will enable stable operation if they are close enough. But the output capacitor must have a low equivalent series resistance (E.S.R.) and multilayer Ceramic Capacitors excel, here. Remember that those required minimum capacitors are what must be very close (within a few tenths of an inch), physically, to the regulator. Other larger electrolytic capacitors can be paralleled, further away.
