Why do blue neon signs look green when I look at them through orange lenses?
Is it because the blue neon sign also produces green light, and subtracts the blue leaving only green for my eyes to see, or is it because my orange lens glasses just make the blue light look green? What I mean is is the green already there in the light(and the orange lenses help me see it), or are my goggles doing something to the blue to make it look green, by adding something or removing the blue? It seems a little confusing but I am just curious.
Draw out a quick color wheel: R,G, and B take up the corners of an equilateral triangle (red, green, and blue are the primary colors). Now, M (magenta) goes between R and B (it’s an equal mixture of red and blue), C (cyan) goes between G and B, and Y (yellow) goes between R and G. Now, we can place orange between Y and R. I will guess that your blue light is actually cyan. Orange is opposite the space between C and B. The orange lens, then, subtracts out mostly blue, and a little green. If the light is a mixture of blue and green, it will appear green through the lens. Did any of that make sense?
